2020 BUSINESS OUTLOOK SURVEY RESULTS | | |
|
How’s business shaping up in Oshkosh for 2020? That is the question we asked local CEOs, business managers and owners.
The results of the Oshkosh Chamber’s Annual Business Outlook Survey, a barometer that we use to gauge the degree of confidence of business leaders, is further indication that local businesses are bullish on what the economy holds for 2020 and beyond. We found that 81.8% of the participating CEOs rate their companies’ outlook as good to excellent in the next 6 months and 77.7% rate their outlook as good to excellent in the next 1 – 3 years.
Of the local CEOs and business owners who participated in our annual Business Outlook Survey, 67 percent reported that sales increased in 2019 over the previous year, 64 percent indicated that profits were up, and 75 percent increased wages. This past year, 49 percent of reporting companies added staff to their payrolls. In 2019, 79 percent of the respondents indicated that their companies met or exceeded profitability expectations. Those companies missing the mark on profitability expectations cited higher operating costs and sales shortfall, along with increased taxes.
When asked their forecasts for 2020, 83% believe that sales will out-perform the previous year’s sales level and 57% expect to add employees. Overall, participating firms expect sales gains according to 69% of the reporting companies in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the previous quarter. 78% of these companies expect sales increases in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same quarter in 2019. 60% of area CEOs expect to hire more people in 2020 and 50% expect to make a capital expenditure. While this is all very good news, business leaders report that finding qualified workers remains a challenge, with 30% indicating they have job openings that are unfilled. Over one-third of the respondents cited recruiting qualified labor to fill current job openings as an obstacle to growing their business.
